Abstract

Introduction: Coarctation of the aorta is a congenital narrowing of the lumen of the aorta that causes partial obstruction of blood flow. The form of clinical presentation depends on the severity of the injury and associated malformations. It causes heart failure, high blood pressure and pulmonary hypertension. The William Soler Cardiocentre is the national reference center for its treatment. Objectives: identify the most frequent ages of intervention, the associated anomalies, the most used surgical techniques and their relationship with the final result. Methods: It is a retrospective description of the surgical outcome from 2010 to May 2023. Variables were expressed in mean and standard deviation for the quantitative ones; numbers and percentages for qualitative ones. To identify a possible association, the corresponding test was used according to the type of variable. Results: 188 operations were performed for coarctation of the aorta, 12 of them for recoarctation. Pulmonary banding was also performed in 27 patients in whom ventricular septal defect was associated. At less than three months of age, 60% of the patients underwent surgery. In this group, the most used technique was the end-to-end anastomosis. Patch aortoplasty was used in 90% of those operated on over one year of age. Age was related to morbidity and mortality. No relationship was found between the outcome at discharge and the surgical technique. Conclusions: Early diagnosis of aortic coarctation ensures timely and safe surgical treatment at the William Soler Cardiocenter.
