Body height and weight. Which one has more influence on blood pressure figures?

Abstract

Introduction and Objectives: There are many risk factors for the development of high figures of blood pressure and there is no doubt that obesity, and overweight, its precursor, is among of the most studied ones. The most common formula for determining the ponderal status of an individual is the body mass index. It is formed by two components: weight and height. The present study is aimed at determining the level of influence of body weight and height on blood pressure figures when acting independently. Methods: A longitudinal and descriptive study on a sample of 705 non-hypertensive students was carried out. The students were part of the Research Project PESESCAD-HTA and were between 12 and 15 years of age. They underwent three blood pressure measurements as well as ponderal measurements. Results: The body/weight correlation index,

(r = 0.60, p < 0.05) in the study and (r = 0.70, p<0.001) in the control, was very adequate. There was a very close and independent relation between weight and height concerning the blood pressure figures (p<0,001). Conclusions: Both weight and height show strong and similar influences on blood pressure figures acting in an independent way.
