Abstract

Introduction and objectives: Cardiovascular diseases represent one of the biggest threats for health systems all over the world.  The fast development of imaging techniques in Cardiology has contributed effectively to increase the accuracy of the diagnosis. There is a new echocardiographic variable which has an unavoidable importance nowadays: the Tei Index. It has applications in different areas, and hypertension is among the most important ones.  The objective of this investigation is to determine, by means of an echocardiography, the degree of structural damage in the studied patients; and to assess the applicability of this index during the hypertensive emergency. Methods: A longitudinal descriptive study was carried out with a representative sample formed by 357 patients between 25 and 50 years of age. They had a diagnosis of essential hypertension and were assisted at the echocardiography office of the “Ernesto Che Guevara” Cardiology Hospital in Santa Clara City. Results: The highest correlation with the arterial tension figures was for the Tei Index variable (p < 0,05). Conclusions: The identification of diastolic dysfunction using the Tei Index turns out to be a reliable method which expands the range of the echocardiographic study in this kind of patients.
