Introduction: Cardiovascular surgery includes the practice of valve surgery, myocardial revascularization, repair of congenital defects and others. With a global mortality that amounts to 15%. Classification trees help in future decision making for prevention. Objective: Develop a classification tree for the risk of in-hospital mortality in the postoperative period of cardiovascular surgery. Method: Cross-sectional descriptive study to identify factors related to death during postoperative hospitalization, which included a classification tree of risk factors using the CHAID algorithm. Results: 6 child classification nodes were obtained from the main node “State at discharge”, which indicated, in the study carried out, that patients with a mechanical artificial ventilation time greater than 24 hours had a probability of dying of 44.4 % and if transfusion of blood products is added, the probability increases to 53.7 %. On the contrary, if the time of mechanical artificial ventilation was less than 24 hours, the probability of death was only 1.7 %, which increased to 20 % if a history of chronic kidney disease was associated. Conclusions: A classification tree created ordered the factors related to mortality based on the variable with the greatest proximity, which was the time of mechanical artificial ventilation greater than 24 hours.
