Effectiveness of an Educational Intervention for Secondary Prevention in Patients with Chronic Ischemic Heart Disease
Abstract
Introduction: Ischemic heart disease typically results from atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries. It encompasses chronic ischemic heart disease and acute coronary syndromes, with or without ST segment elevation, characterized primarily by precordial pain. In Cuba, particularly in the Villa Clara province, heart diseases account for a significant number of fatalities. However, there is currently no specific educational program aimed at reducing the incidence of acute episodes.
Objective: To implement and evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention for preventing acute cardiovascular events in patients with chronic ischemic heart disease.
Method: A participatory action research was conducted to design and implement an educational intervention system aimed at increasing patients' basic knowledge about their disease and preventing the occurrence of acute cardiovascular events.
Results: There was a reduction in acute events from 69.7% to 9.1%. Of the participants, 63.6% were female, 68.8% were white, and 69.7% were hypertensive. 69.7% experienced acute events, with unstable angina accounting for 60.8% of cases. All smokers experienced acute events. Knowledge levels increased, and acute events decreased in the sample following the intervention, with an effectiveness rate of 75%.
Conclusions: The effectiveness of the educational intervention in improving the evaluated indicators within the sample was demonstrated.Downloads
