Biomarkers of myocardial injury
Abstract
Acute chest pain is a frequent symptom in emergency services. The serial measurements of cardiac biomarkers, in their assessment, aid diagnosis, risk stratification, and have prognostic and therapeutic implications. A review of biomarkers of myocardial injury is proposed: cardiac troponins, creatine kinase MB fraction, natriuretic peptidesand other novel cardiac biomarkers; as well as their behavior in acute coronary syndrome and other heart diseases. They are an essential tool for the evaluation of patients with chest pain, in addition to the clinical method, mainly cardiac troponins because of its high sensitivity and negative predictive value.
