Abstract

Señor Editor:
Las neumonías nosocomiales (NN) son las que aparecen 48 horas después del ingreso hospitalario, constituyen la segunda causa de infección en salas generales y la primera, en las unidades de terapia intensiva (UTI) en todo el mundo. Su incidencia se ha informado entre 10 - 20 %, la cual puede llegar hasta un 20 % en aquellos pacientes que reciben ventilación artificial mecánica, y su mortalidad supera el 50 %; por eso son consideradas enfermedades de elevadas morbilidad, mortalidad y repercusión socioeconómica.
