Severe mitral stenosis due to giant atrial myxoma in a geriatric patient
Abstract
Myxomas are the most common benign tumors in the heart and approximately 75% of them are found in the left atrium. They represent a rare disease in clinical practice and their prevalence is of around the 0.2% of all human neoplasms. We present the case of a 77-year-old woman with personal pathological history of diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure and long-standing hypertensive heart disease who was admitted in the department of geriatrics with diagnosis of community-acquired bronchopneumonia presenting marked asthenia, anorexia, dyspnea on slight exertion, non-productive cough, and weight loss of approximately 10 kg in three months. An echocardiogram was performed that showed the presence of giant myxoma in the left atrium causing severe mitral stenosis.
