Comparison of two tables to determine global cardiovascular risk
Abstract
Introduction: Global cardiovascular risk estimation is the best tool to establish priorities in primary prevention. Its determination by means of tables allows more efficient decision-making than when cardiovascular risk factors are evaluated separately.
Objective: To compare two tables to determine global cardiovascular risk.
Method: A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out. The study’s population consisted of 803 people; out of the three study groups a sample of 585 people was obtained from January 2016 to October 2018. The calculation of global cardiovascular risk was performed according to the criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO) cardiovascular disease risk charts and Framingham tables by Wilson category. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used for the analysis between the two variables.
Results: According to the WHO cardiovascular disease risk charts the following risk categories were established: low (51.28%), moderate (29.92%) as well as high, very high and extremely high risk levels (18.80 %). According to the Framingham tables the 32.99% of participants had a low risk; 41.20%, moderate and 25.81%, high. There was a good correlation between both cardiovascular risk equations (0.875).
Conclusions: There is a good correlation between the two risk equations. The moderate and high risk levels determined by the Framingham tables in these study groups were higher, so it can be thought that the WHO cardiovascular disease risk charts underestimate the categories of higher risk.
