Diagnosis of Ebstein's anomaly in a pregnant woman
Abstract
Ebstein's anomaly is a congenital heart disease characterized by an apical displacement of the tricuspid valve annulus with malformation of its septal and posterior leaflets. Survival to adulthood is high and prognosis depends on the severity of tricuspid regurgitation, right ventricular dysfunction and cyanosis. We present the case of a 36-year-old pregnant woman diagnosed with unrepaired Ebstein's anomaly and history of two other pregnancies with short inter-gestational periods and associated comorbidities: Two vaginal deliveries with fetal complications (intrauterine growth retardation, preterm delivery and low birth weight), without maternal complications; both fetuses were discharged alive. She failed to comply with the instructions received during preconception counseling. Her last pregnancy was terminated by induced abortion, with no complications. The present case highlights the importance of multisectoral work to prevent maternal and fetal complications.
